BYD ESC fault warning light: what it means and what to do

What the electronic stability control (ESC) fault warning light means on BYD models, when it is safe to continue and when to stop.

What this means

The ESC (electronic stability control) fault warning light comes on when the ignition is switched on and should go out within a few seconds if the system is working properly. If it comes back on and stays on, the electronic stability system has failed. If the ESC light flashes briefly while driving, it indicates ESC is actively working (for example on a slippery surface) and is not a fault by itself.

What causes it

A steady ESC fault light usually points to a genuine system fault rather than something the driver caused. According to the official handbook, if the ESC warning light stays on together with the ABS warning light and the braking-system warning light, this is a serious combined fault: braking at that point can make the vehicle extremely unstable, and the anti-lock braking system will not work at all.

What to do

If only the ESC light is on by itself, drive gently and have the vehicle checked by a BYD authorised dealer or service provider as soon as possible. If the ESC light is on together with the ABS and braking-system warning lights, stop the vehicle in a safe place immediately and contact BYD service or roadside assistance rather than continuing to drive.

Frequently asked questions

What does ESC stand for?

Electronic Stability Control, a system that helps keep the vehicle stable during sudden manoeuvres or on slippery surfaces.

Is it normal for the ESC light to flash while driving?

Yes -- a brief flash means the ESC system is actively intervening, for example on a slippery road, and does not indicate a fault by itself.

What if the ESC, ABS and brake warning lights are all on together?

This is a serious combined fault. Stop the vehicle safely as soon as possible and contact BYD service or roadside assistance -- braking in this state can make the vehicle very unstable and the ABS will not function.

Can I keep driving with only the ESC light on?

You can drive gently to a safe location, but have the vehicle inspected by an authorised BYD service provider as soon as possible rather than continuing normal driving.

Does ESC affect braking directly?

ESC works alongside the ABS and braking system to maintain stability; a genuine ESC fault can be linked to wider braking-system issues, which is why a combined warning is treated more seriously.

Is this specific to one BYD model?

No -- ESC fault behaviour is described in BYD's owner handbooks across its current model range, not just one vehicle.
