BYD charging stopped or interrupted: what the connection indicator means

How to tell normal automatic charge-stop from a genuine charging fault on BYD EV and DM-i models, using the charging connection indicator.

What this means

The charging connection indicator lights up on the instrument cluster whenever the vehicle is connected to charging equipment. According to the official handbook, the vehicle system automatically stops charging once the high-voltage battery is fully charged -- this is normal behaviour, not a fault, and the charge port is equipped with an electronic lock during this process. A genuine fault is different: it shows as the separate "Please check the OBC system" message, or as the low-voltage power system fault warning light indicating a charging-system failure while connected.

What causes it

Charging that stops earlier than expected can be caused by the battery reaching a scheduled charge limit, a timer or scheduled-charging setting in the vehicle or app, the charge point itself pausing (common on public AC chargers), or a genuine fault in the on-board charger or the low-voltage system. Checking which message or light is showing (if any) is the fastest way to tell a normal stop from a fault.

What to do

If charging stops with no fault message and the battery shows less charge than expected, check your charging schedule/timer settings and the charge point's own status first. If "Please check the OBC system" appears, disconnect and reconnect the equipment, then contact BYD service if it persists. If the low-voltage power system fault light comes on during charging, treat it as a fault and contact a BYD authorised dealer or service provider.

Frequently asked questions

Is it normal for charging to stop by itself?

Yes -- the vehicle automatically stops charging once the high-voltage battery is fully charged, which is expected behaviour, not a fault.

How do I know if a stopped charge is a fault or normal?

Check whether a fault message like "Please check the OBC system" or a warning light is showing; if nothing is displayed, it is more likely a normal stop, a schedule setting, or the charge point itself.

Can a public charge point cause an interruption that isn't the car's fault?

Yes -- public AC and DC chargers can pause or stop a session for reasons on their end; checking the charger's own display or app is worthwhile before assuming a vehicle fault.

What does the charging connection indicator on its own mean?

It simply confirms the vehicle is connected to charging equipment; it is not itself a fault indicator.

Should I keep trying to charge if "Please check the OBC system" keeps appearing?

No -- disconnect, reconnect once to rule out a connection issue, and if the message returns, stop and contact a BYD authorised dealer or service provider rather than repeatedly retrying.

Does this guidance apply to both AC and DC charging?

The automatic stop-when-full behaviour and the OBC fault message relate to the on-board charger used for AC charging; DC fast charging uses different equipment, so a DC-specific interruption may show different information depending on the charge point.
